It was a repeat performance for the Lion King on Friday as Mario Cipollinitook his third stage win at the 2002 Vuelta a España taking a furiousfield sprint into the coastal city of Málaga.
Cipollini and his Acqua e Sapone team held back until the final two kilometersbefore launching a text-book lead-out for their super sprinter. On the wheelof his reliable lead-out man Giovanni Lombardi, Cipollini easily beat theVuelta’s points leader Erik Zabel (Telekom). Kelme’s Oscar Sevilla finishedwith the main field and retains the overall lead in the Vuelta.

Today’s live coverage of stage 7:
Good morning and welcome to VeloNews.com’s live coverage of Stage 7 of the 2002 Vuelta a España.
The seventh stage could be really interesting as the riders who had notsuffered that much in the mountains will try to take advantage of today’sflat 196.8 ride from Jaen to Málaga. A big feature in this stagewill be the downhill from Antequera to Málaga because this could givethose ahead a great advantage. Málaga welcomed Vuelta a Españafor the first time in1936 and in her streets, winners such as Noel Dejonckheere, Fabio Baldato or Marcel Wust celebrated their victories.
3:35 p.m. – We are already 120km into today’s stage. As has been the case all week, we have had another early escape at the 23km mark and there are now four riders off the front with a lead of 4:35over the peloton. The four men in the break are German Nieto Fernandez (Relax- Fuenlabrada); Elio Aggiano(Mapei ); Nicolas Portal (Ag2r Prevoyance) MarianoPiccoli (Lampre).
3:42 p.m. – The leaders advantange continues to hover at 4:30 or so.
3:51 p.m. — At 130km, the four leaders are now 3:50 ahead of the peloton.
3:54 p.m. – The four men in front have had their lead cut to 3:27.
3:57 p.m. – The peloton is moving along at a brisk 48kph pace. The two big sprinters’ teams — Telekom and Acqua e Sapone — are setting pace at the front. The four leaders are about 3:05, with 61km remaining.
4:07 p.m. – With 51km remaining, the leaders are 2:35 ahead of the main field. Telekom and A&S continue to set pace at the front. It is becomingquite evident that the four escapees are going to be reeled in before thesprint into Málaga.
4:15 p.m. — As the leaders are working their way up a slight grade, German Nieto Fernandez has been dropped. He is now drifting backwards and will be caught by the peloton. The remaining three leaders — Elio Aggiano(Mapei ); Nicolas Portal (Ag2r Prevoyance) Mariano Piccoli (Lampre) — have an advantage of 1:50 over the main field.
4:18 p.m. — Up and over the climb, Nieto Fernandez has worked his way back up to the lead group. He is clearly the weakest of the group. Theystill have a lead of 1:25.
4:23 p.m. – With 43km to go, the four leaders are now just a minute ahead of the field. Telekom and Acqua e Sapone are still setting tempo at the front of the field.
4:27 p.m. -- With 41km remaining, the lead has now been cut to 50 seconds.
4:31 p.m. — We are 38km from the finish in Málaga. The peloton is letting the leaders’ advantage stay at around 40 seconds.
4:40 p.m. — The peloton is all together again and we can expectanother sprint into the finish.
4:44 p.m. — We are now 27km from the finish in Málaga. From the looks of the front of the peloton, we can see Telekom and Acqua e Sapone are working to set up their ace sprinters: Erik Zabel and Mario Cipollini. Those two teams are at the front.
5:06 p.m. – The peloton is flying down the descent to Málaga. We are 10km from the finish.
Up front, the Domo team has taken over the work at the front. Behind them, Telekom and Acqua e Sapone are working to set up their top sprinters.
5:09 p.m. — With 7km to go, we have two riders a few meters off thefront. They have only a slight lead and the two escapees are about to bereeled in.
5:13 p.m. – We have 5km to go. Telekom and Zabel are up front alongwith the Domos who are working for their man Blijlevens. Acqua & Saponeare not up there.
5:14 p.m. – With three km to go, it is still Telekom.
5:15 p.m. — There they are. A&S have come to the front with 2kmto go.
5:17 p.m. – With a km to go, the Acqua e Sapone men are driving likecrazy.
Lombardi leads him so perfectly! With Cipo on his wheel Lombardi is alreadygapping the men behind Cipo’
Zabel fights to get on Cipollini’s wheel. He’s on Cipo’s wheel….. but theLion King charges off and has full bike length on Zabel. Sven Teutenburg(Ina’s brother) takes third.
