An arbitration panel with the Court of Arbitration for Sport has recommendeda six-month suspension for T-Mobile’s Amber Neben after she tested positivefor nandrolone metabolites following the UCI World Cup race in Montrealon May 31.Neben accepted a provisional suspension on July 13, when she was informedof the positive test, which is now regarded as the starting point of hersix-month penalty. The United States Anti-Doping Agency announced interim decision by thethree-member panel of the American Arbitration Association (AAA)/NorthAmerican Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday.Neben has protested her innocence saying that she may have ingesteda contaminated food supplement (see “Nebenfaces battle after nandro’ positive“).In accordance with the USADA Protocol for Olympic Movement Testing, the case was referred to USADA on July 24, 2003 for adjudication from USACycling, which received the case from the UCI, who collected the sample.
In addition to her six month suspension, the Panel ruled thatNeben would also have an 18-month probationary period in which she is subjectto monthly doping control tests, at her own expense, and is
required to educate cyclists about the dangers of dietary supplements. She was also disqualified from her 12th-place finish at the Montreal WorldCup.
