Kuala Lumpur – Genting Highlands (131.6km)
Colombia-Selle Italia’s svelte climbers Ruber Marin and Freddy Gonzalez conquered the steep 25km ascent to Malaysia’s Genting Highlands during stage 9 of the Tour de Langkawi, taking 1-2 on the day and keeping the leader’s jersey within the team after fellow countryman and first-year teammate Marlon Perez was dropped in the final 6km.
It was a bittersweet day for Perez, who spent much of the past week in the leader’s jersey but couldn’t match the pace of an aggressive peloton and finished 3:10 down on the day, putting the jersey back on Gonzalez’s shoulders with only a ceremonial criterium in Malaysia’s capital of Kuala Lumpur remaining. Sitting in second place overall after the race is South African Ryan Cox of Barloworld, 48 seconds back.
Known as the race’s decisive stage, the Genting climb took on extra significance this year as 17 riders were positioned less than three minutes from the race lead. However, Colombia-Selle Italia, which took control of the Tour de Langkawi on stage 2’s climb into the Cameron Highlands, was highly favored coming into the day with Perez in yellow and Gonzalez third, 46 seconds down.
Canadian National’s Peter Wedge, a four-time veteran of Genting who had a 27-tooth cassette installed for the day, had this to say about the climb beforehand.
“It starts out innocent enough, and then it just keeps going,” Wedge said. “Every time you come around a bend you see the opening in the trees and you think, ‘Oh yeah, we’re almost there,’ and then you’re not – not even close. Every year it’s the same thing, you think you’re getting closer and closer, and then you get to the steeper stuff at the end, and at the last 2km it’s just brutal. There’s always somebody who tries to light it up, too, at the bottom and set a pretty hard tempo and shell all the non-climbers or whatever, and there’s really no point because they get shelled anyway because it’s so long.”
And sure enough, after an 11-man breakaway was reeled in at the base of the one-hour climb, it was De-Nardi’s Michele Gobbi who first decided to set a fast tempo, quickly opening a gap of 1:33 with 19km remaining. Another attack, from Wismilack’s Susanto Tonton, put two men off the front riding alone in front of a hesitant peloton.
With 15km remaining, Gobbi held a 2:30 lead over the main group and one minute over Tonton as riders began to get shelled. Of those dropped, the biggest surprise early on was second-placed-overall Hector Guerra (Relax-Bodysol), who finished almost 10 minutes down.
As the thinning peloton approached the final 10km, Tonton was reeled in and then dropped. Sitting at the front of the group were Marin, Perez, Dave Bruylandts (Chocolade-Jacques), Nicholas White (South Afirca) Ghader Mizbiani (Iran) and David George and Cox (Barloworld). Struggling to maintain the pace were Canada’s Roland Green and Lampre’s Wladimir Belli, who lingered about 50m behind.
Then, with 6km remaining, Perez cracked. Gonzalez and teammate Huberlino Mesa tried to pull him back to the group of approximately 15 riders, but it was no use. While Mesa stayed back, Gonzalez bridged to Marin, and the pair quickly attacked, passing Gobbi with a clear path to the stage win. At the finish the pair crossed the line together, hands linked in a victory salute.
“The most important thing today was to keep hold of the yellow jersey,” Gonzalez said. “At 6km to go Marlon came into difficulty, and then there was no other option for us than to attack. We just needed to get as much time out of the other riders as possible.”
Twenty seconds behind Bruylandts and Cox rode together, with George and teammate Tiann Kannemeyer another minute down. Further down the mountain Green caught and passed Mizbani and White, finishing seventh, 1:36 down, as the top North American.
“I felt good today,” said Green, who said beforehand that all he hoped for was a top-10 finish. “I’m really happy with the way it went today.”
Green also had a compliment for Mizbani, the largely unknown Iranian rider who has led the Best Asian Rider competition for the entire tour.
“When I went by him I had to accelerate,” Green said, “because I thought if he stays on my wheel he’s going to be hard to drop. He’s a tough dude.”
Mizbani was happy about the performance, explaining that his previous three visits to the Tour de Langkawi have been marred with bad luck.
“But this year, until this stage I haven’t had bad luck,” Mizbani said, “and I hope tomorrow I’ll keep my jersey. I’m happy to have my jersey and be in the top-10 of the general classification.”
Although the two Colombians rolled across the finish together, Marin was awarded the win, claiming the KOM jersey from Perez, while Gonzalez took the overall lead and, presumably, the overall win. It was the third time a Selle Italia rider has won at Genting under the guidance of team director Gianni Savio, who was all smiles at the podium presentation.
“We defended Perez in the first part of the climb,” Savio said, “because the gentleman’s agreement in our team was — I decided last night after talking with Freddy and Marlon — that Freddy would not attack Marlon. But, if Marlon was in difficulty, it was sure that Freddy would make his race, and take the overall also. It was very good for us; many compliments to my riders.”
“Many compliments to Barloworld,” Savio added, “because they made a good race and I think it’s good that they will win the team classification. Today they made the race, with three riders in the first group, so I think it’s good.”
Race notes
Health Net’s Gord Fraser crashed in the rolling neutralized zone before the stage began, scraping his arm and hip and requiring several visits to his team car and the caravan’s medical vehicle throughout the day. No word yet on the cause, as Fraser rolled straight to the race doctor after the finish, bypassing the podium presentation of his blue points jersey. Fraser’s teammate John Lieswyn was the top U.S. rider on the day, finishing 30th, 6:44 down, dropping him to 23rd overall, 8:53 down.
Saturday was an impressive showing for the country of South Africa, which now boasts four riders in the top-six overall, three from Barloworld (Cox, Kannemeyer and George) and one from the South African national team (White).
Rumors have been circulating throughout the peloton that Colombia-Selle Italia has been enjoying an “arrangement” of sorts with the Belgian Palmans-Collstrop team – a team that has spent an inordinate amount of time at the front of the peloton over the past four days. Not so, say both teams’ directors, insisting Palmans-Collstrop has been chasing after points at the intermediate sprints to catapult Belgian Gert Vanderaerden into second in the points competition ahead of Perez.
“No, no, no, we just want to keep the speed high so it’s impossible to make any attacks,” said Palmans-Collstrop’s team director Luc Landuyt. “We hold second so far on the intermediates, so we want to try and catch some points, that was the main thing. Today we got ourselves 10 points, so I think we’re going to get another 10 and then we’re quite sure we’ve got second-place. But for that, it’s going to be difficult of course.”
Selle Italia’s Savio answer was somewhat less clear. “In cycling always there is one thing where everyone is interested,” he said. “Collstrap wants to make results in the sprints and it helps us as well.”
Jersey update:Yellow (Overall leader): Although the leader’s jersey stays within the same team, Colombia-Selle Italia, it shifts shoulders, from 24-year-old revelation Perez to Gonzalez. Ryan Cox of Barloworld sits second,48 seconds down – an insurmountable amount to be regained during Sunday’s circuit race barring a serious injury to GonzalezBlue (Points): All Canadian Gord Fraser has to Sunday is keep his bike upright to claim his points jersey, as he leads Vanderaerden 105 to 64.Polka Dot (KOM): After days wearing Perez’s KOM jersey while Perez wore yellow, teammate Ruber Marin claimed it outright with his stage win in Genting. Sunday’s course holds no mountains points, so it’s Marin’s to enjoy.White, Red and Blue (Top Asian rider): Iran’s Ghader Mizbani, 10th on the general classification, leads teammate Ahad Kazemi by nearly four minutes.
