Verbrugghe holds on for Giro stage win

Exhausted, but happy: Verbrugghe holds off a charging peloton.

Saturday’s 236km stage from Cesana to Saltara certainly won’t decide the overall winner of the 2006 Giro d’Italia, but it may have revealed some cracks in at least one of the pre-race favorites.

While Belgian Rik Verbrugghe was off the front gunning his way to a hard-fought solo stage win, Italian Danilo Di Luca was noticeably absent from a fast-closing group that included the rest of the Giro’s big GC guns — Paolo Savoldelli, Gilberto Simoni and Damiano Cunego.

At the finish Di Luca (Liquigas) managed to limit his losses to second-place finisher Savoldelli (Discovery Channel) to 20 seconds, plus a 12-second time bonus. But the steady, not-overly steep closing climb into Saltara was one most figured would favor last year’s fourth place finisher. And Di Luca looked even worse on the day’s biggest grind, the 15km Category 1 ascent of Monte Catria, where he was dropped by his fellow favorites and had to fight his way back on.

Savoldelli may have been the day’s big winner

Mini-climber Jose Rujano (Selle-Italia) also surrendered time, coming across 35th at 1:03.

“On the steeper climbs, Di Luca did not look so good,” said CSC’s Jens Voigt, whose team leader Ivan Basso was sixth just two seconds back of Il Falco. “Maybe [Di Luca] is not as good as people think. We will see.”

In the meantime, the coveted maglia rosa was swapped among T-Mobile teammates for the second time in as many days. After surrendering the pink jersey to Olaf Pollack at the finish of stage 6 in Forli, Ukraine’s Sergei Honchar took it back after finishing seventh on Saturday, 16 seconds back of Verbrugghe. Pollack, a sprinter through and through, was 71st at 11:42. Afterwards Honchar denied that he been angry with his teammate for taking his prize, but he was clearly a happy to be back in the limelight.

“No, it was a great thing for Olaf,” Honchar said. “He did a good job in the time trial. But today I had [teammate Matthias] Kessler in front, so that was good for me. I didn’t think this stage would be so hard.”

Verbrugghe (Cofidis) also did his share of suffering. After making his way into the day’s breakaway of the day, the Belgian who hail from near Liège, attacked his four fellow escapees with 5km to go. From there Verbrugghe grabbed hard on the top of his handlebars, put his head down and dug for all he was worth.

“I was feeling very good all day, but the last 600 meters were very hard,” said Verbrugghe, who won a time trial stage at the 2001 Giro and a stage in the Tour de France that same year, but has only four smaller victories since. “I didn’t know the gap on the climb, but I saw the Mavic [neutral support] car was behind me, so I knew it was more than 30 seconds. I was afraid to look back so I didn’t.”

If Verbrugghe had taken a peek, first he would have seen his former breakaway companions — Victor Hugo Peña (Phonak), Juan Manuel Garate (Quick Step-Innergetic), Francisco Vila Errandonea (Lampre-Fondital) and Manuele Mori (Saunier Duval-Prodir) being absorbed by what was left of the peloton.

Savoldelli would have been next into view, as the defending champion jumped away at the finish to grab a few precious seconds from his chief rivals.

“Savoldelli attacked and he’s got such a punch it’s incredible,” said teammate Tom Danielson, one of three Discovery riders around to aid their team captain in the race’s waning moments. “At the end it got harder and harder and harder, but we were just trying to keep Paolo in the front. I did a little effort before the climb and a little bit on the climb. From there I just tried to ride my own race up to the top. My legs are good, but this type of effort, a 500-meter uphill sprint, it’s not good for me.”

Still Danielson was 17th across the line, at 0:29, and is seventh in the overall standings. Danielson spoke for many, calling it by far the toughest day thus far of the 2006 Giro.

“It had everything,” he said. “I can’t even remember the gravel road it’s been such a long day. It was incredible. It was really hot. You could see towards the end people all had goose bumps. Everyday is a different story, a different adventure, a different struggle.”

After some early-race action, the race’s first big move was the two-man break of Belgian Staf Scheirlinckx (Cofidis) and France’s Sylvain Calzati (Ag2R). They were given a lengthy on a day that would end up lasting 6:42:15, opening up a gap that neared 20 minutes. Then, as the bunch began to pull things back together, a 30-man counter attack formed 150km from the finish that included the final five. They quickly ate into Scheirlinckx and Calzati’s advantage, while Discovery kept the tempo high behind them because they only had one rider in the big move.

“The group of 30 meant we had to chase,” said Jason McCartney. “I did some work before the cat. 1 climb and then was popped and that was it. I had a bad day. Hopefully it’s only one.”

McCartney finished with the laughing group, more than 20 minutes back.

Back at the front the endgame was afoot, with Garate the most aggressive of the five. He attacked several times on the run in to the finish, but to no avail.

Finally Verbrugghe, who hadn’t done any work earlier in the day because he had teammate Scheirlinckx up the road, made his decisive move.

“The others were a little angry with my attack,” the blond Belgian admitted. “But the early escape had been good for me. I had wanted to win the prologue, but I thought maybe I would have some other opportunities. I thought today might be good because the climbs were not so bad. It turned out that it was.”
