Sager, Williams win at Cross Crusade

More than 1,200 riders turned out for the second race in the River City Bicycles Cyclocross Crusade 2008 series October 12.
The Wilsonville, Oregon, course resembled a plowed field surrounded by a rock quarry. The lumpy loose dirt, steep dirt piles, gravelly corners and rocky pits favored racers with strong technical skills. Most were thankful not to have mud added to the mountain bike-like course.
In the Category A men’s race, Jason Sager followed up a week one win with another first after a four-lap battle with a strong pack that included several Vanilla Bicycles riders. About 40 minutes into the race, he finally secured the lead and enjoyed taunting Chris Sheppard, who started at the back of the pack after race officials assessed a 30-second penalty for being on the course during another race, but caught up to finish second.
“It was important to ride in front to be able to pick my lines and dictate the pace,” Sager said. He was able to use his mountain bike skills to his advantage on the technical sections and catch some rest behind other riders on the road flats early in the race. Rounding out the top five were Kevin Hulik (Vanilla Bicycles), Kevin Bradford-Parrish, and Ian Brown (Vanilla Bicycles).
It was a banner day for the women of Team River City Bicycles as Bridget Stoick aggressively took the lead for the first lap of the women’s race, but she soon had her work cut out for her by the strong ladies’ field. While last week’s winner, Sue Butler (Monavie/Cannondale), was in Ohio for the UCI series race, Wendy Williams (River City) pulled solidly away from Alice Pennington (DeSalvo Custom Cycles) to secure the win, while Emily VanMeter(River City) finished third and Stoick (River City) fourth, followed by Megan Farris (River City) in fifth.
