Team Cyclocrossworld.com-Cannondale doubled up this past weekend during the UCI 1 Toronto International Cyclocross in Toronto, Canada, putting Jeremy Powers atop the podium on Saturday with Tim Johnson taking the win on Sunday.

Canadians had plenty to cheer about, too, as Ottawa’s Natasha Elliott (Stevens-EMD Sorono) scored two consecutive victories on the muddy Centennial Park course.

On Saturday, Powers capitalized on Saturday’s wet and muddy course to stomp to a dominating win, nearly a minute ahead of Johnson and more than two minutes ahead of third-placed Nicholas Weighall (Rad Racing Northwest-Hagens-B).

“The course was really cool,” said Powers. “Honestly it was one of the best races I’ve ever done, all the features reminded me of some of the better courses I’ve done in Europe. It was technically challenging, but in a good way. If you rode hard and rode well it wasn’t a problem, but you really had to pay attention. I think the bad weather calls out the real racers.”

The women’s race saw Elliott grab the lead and hold it throughout the race. Victoria’s Dawn Anderson (Oak Bay Bikes), fourth at Canadian nationals in October, passed Kristin Wentworth (Planet Bike) to take second place.

Weather was a factor again on Sunday, and this time Johnson made all the right moves, claiming the win almost a minute ahead of Powers.

“I had a good race on Saturday, but I really wanted to do better today,” said Johnson. “At first the course seemed pretty straightforward — up the hill and back down kinda thing. But after riding it I found that there was much more to it and actually liked it. I hit the hill each lap to check the other riders’ fitness. Then I attacked both up and down and was able to keep the gap. I got into a nice rhythm as the race went on.”

Elliott also was enjoying a nice rhythm. This time, Rebecca Wellons (Ridley) went out for the early lead, but Elliott caught her quickly on lap 2. Anderson followed, but the trio didn’t last long as Elliott kept the pressure on, shedding her companions.

Wentworth came through to lead the chase and finish second, but couldn’t put a dent in Elliott’s lead.
