After a very brief respite following December’s U.S. National Championships, Team Cyclocrossworld.com-Cannondale riders Jeremy Powers and Jamey Driscoll turned their talents to the rough-and-tumble world of European cyclocross racing. Far from being overwhelmed, Jeremy and Jamey capitalized on good legs and a full season of domestic racing to turn in some impressive results against the world’s best ‘cross stars. While the sailing was not always smooth, both riders showed they belong among the top cyclocrossers in the seething cauldron of Euro ‘cross.
Still riding the scintillating form that took him to a second-place finish at Nationals, Jamey started the ball rolling with a solid 26th place finish, and top American finisher, at the UCI World Cup in Zolder, Belgium. Next it was Jeremy’s turn to shine as he broke through with a 7th place at the frigid seaside Noordzeecross in Middelkerke, Belgium. It marked Jeremy’s first time in the top-10 of an elite race in Europe. Unfortunately the day went poorly for Jamey as he was caught up in a crash and injured his wrist.
Jeremy followed up on his breakthrough Middelkerke result with another incredible ride the next day, finishing 13th in the main chase group at the Azencross in Louenhout, Belgium.
“The campaign went great,” said Jeremy after finishing 19th at the Vlaamse Witloof Veldrit in Tervuren, Belgium. “No one was sick, we had no major injuries, the bikes worked really well, we had great help from SRAM’s Chris McKenney and Cannondale’s factory team van kept us sheltered and warm before the races. So far its been awesome experience and my most successful Euro trip ever.”
“I felt good in Zolder, I had good legs warming up, the dry and fast courses have suited me well this year and I was pleased with my race there,” said Jamey, who closed out his Euro campaign with a solid 22nd in Tervuren.
Following Tervuren Jamey headed back to the U.S. in order to make his second semester commitments at the University of Vermont. Meanwhile, Jeremy has embarked on a 10-day training camp in Spain to prepare for the final push of the season, likely to include the World Championships in Hoogerheide, Holland.
Jeremy will next race January 18 at the UCI World Cup in France.
