Stage 8 – February 22: Rancho Bernardo – Escondido, 155.8 km/96.8 mi
Rory Sutherland, as usual, closed out the Tour of California with a top result. Just like in the 2008 edition, Rory finished the final stage a wheel length behind George Hincapie. But this time instead of coming for the win, George and Rory were sprinting for third place just 40 seconds behind the winning duo of Frank Schleck and Vincenzo Nibali.
Total Time: 3.49:19
Stage placing: 4th at 40 seconds
Final GC placing: 34th at 20:11
Body Weight: 75kg
Average speed: 41.3
Average heart rate: 146
Max heart rate: 184
Average cadence: 82
Average watts: 230w

Rory uploaded his SRM power data, which was collected on his Garmin Edge 705, to his TrainingPeaks account within hours of the finish so his coach, Adnan Kadir, could have an immediate look. Adnan pointed out “Of the data that is intact, the most interesting is the (9 minutes, 50 seconds) at 407 watts on the last long climb. It is impressive that he could do that at the end of such a long race week and particularly hard day today.”
Rory added “I felt pretty tired today, but motivated since this stage is near where I live. I really enjoyed racing today. It is a shame we only had Floyd and myself in the bunch, but I had a good sprint and I may as well try! It was a good way to close it.”
Note: Rory’s file has missing data due to interference between his SRM and the Garmin 705 device.
Gustav Larsson Summary:
Unfortunately none of the Team Saxo Bank riders rode with an SRM Sunday so we weren’t able to share his file from the stage. We did however catch up with Gustav Larsson after the stage finish and ask him his thoughts on the final day.
“The whole team did a really good job today. We gave it a good go and put pressure on Astana. Frank (Schleck) won the stage and we won the mountains jersey,” explained Larsson.
When asked about his third place time trial result and his 486 average watts in the 30-minute event Gustav noted “My form is coming along good. I had a really good winter and I keep developing. I expected 480w in the TT and I used the SRM and tried to keep it near that.”
The Solvang time trial stage was Gustav’s first real test of the year and he is using the Tour of California to train for upcoming races. His next big objective is to do well in the Paris-Nice stage race. Following the Tour of California Gustav should be able to apply the collected data directly to his training so he can continue to get even faster.
