Fabian Cancellara of Team Saxo Bank continued his winning ways by adding yet another impressive time trial victory today at the Tour of California prologue. His teammate, Gustav Larsson, placed 38th with a time of 4:45.
Gustav Larsson’s Prologue Summary Data:
Time: 4:45
Average watts: 529w
Body Weight: 80kg (176 lbs)
Average heart rate: 166 bpm
Max heart rate: 175 bpm
Average speed: 48.1 kph (29.9 mph)
Max speed: 57.3 kph (35.6 mph)
Larsson’s ride was a very well-paced effort. Notice how he executes a ‘double peak’ effort, which is a key indicator of a 100 percent effort for the race. With an estimated functional threshold power (FTP) of 400 watts, and an average for the prologue at 529 watts, his ride was 132 percent of his FTP, which is an impressive effort to sustain for nearly 5 minutes.
Bobby Julich, Team Saxo Bank’s Rider Development Manager, described Gustav’s race as satisfactory, however he was a bit tired perhaps from the team’s recent training camp in Agoura Hills, California. Bobby added, “Gustav said that he had a good warmup”, and “a flat time trial like this is not his specialty.”

Julich says to not rule Larsson out.
“This being his first race of the season, he is not disappointed because there could be so many factors for his time. There were many riders who have peaked and tapered for this event and he did not. I think that he has the power to do a good race here and we will see in the days to come how he feels.”
