Quality Bicycle Products, the owner of the Salsa Cycles brand, is recalling some Salsa CroMoto SUL threadless and quill stems sold last year, after receiving reports that two of the stems broke in use.
The company is working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to conduct the recall. In a letter to dealers on Thursday, the company said the breakages were caused by a manufacturing defect and that one rider crash and broke his or her wrist as a result of the stem failure,
“These stems were painted to match and included as original equipment on the following
complete Salsa La Cruz, Casseroll Singlespeed, Casseroll Triple, El Mariachi, and Ala Carte bicycles sold by QBP from November 5, 2007 to December 31, 2008 (QBP Part Numbers BK0050 to BK0081).The recall also includes both road and mountain aftermarket stems in all extensions and rises, except the 60mm, 70mm and 80mm extension lengths. Aftermarket stems were painted black and were sold from March 31, 2008 to December 31, 2008. The affected QBP stem part numbers are: SM0001 through SM0028.
A copy of the company’s recall procedures is available at salsacromotostem.com and at qbp.com.
Because the company is not manufacturing the stems now, exact replacements are not being provided, but consumers will receive $65 store credits to allow them to buy comparable stems.
