VeloNews’ parent company buys the regional publications, will relaunch as a national brand.
Competitor Group (CGI), the leader in endurance sports media and event entertainment, announced that it has acquired Windy City Publishing. The deal includes the company’s six regional active lifestyle publications covering the metropolitan regions of New York, Chicago, Boston, Denver, Minneapolis and Washington DC.
Competitor Magazine will relaunch in June as a consolidated national brand. The six acquired titles will merge with Competitor’s previous five in Texas, the Pacific Northwest, the Southeast, Southern and Northern California. Monthly circulation will now exceed 800,000 copies covering 28 metropolitan regions across the country. Each regional edition will provide local customization of both editorial content and advertiser messaging. The print media expansion compliments CGI’s event business, which annually attracts over 250,000 participants across the country.

The deal includes Windy City Sports, MetroSports New York, MetroSports DC, New England Sports, Rocky Mountain Sports and Twin Cities Sports, as well as their online assets. Doug Kaplan, owner of Windy City, will join CGI as Publisher of Competitor Magazine, and establish CGI’s Midwest office in Chicago. Doug will work alongside longtime Co-Founder of Competitor Magazine, Bob Babbitt, who will be the magazine’s Editor-in-Chief.

All 11 regional editions of Competitor Magazine will focus on the sport of running, as well as the active lifestyle that runners embody through their everyday lives. The national editorial content of each magazine will be supported by award-winning writers, photographers and editors. Local content will continue to serve enthusiasts who seek information about their active community.
