Belgium’s Bert De Waele (Landbouwkrediet – Colnago) won the fourth stage of the Tour of Belgium in a sprint Saturday, finishing ahead of compatriot Greg van Avermaet (Silence-Lotto) and Dutchman Lars Boom (Rabobank), the new overall leader.

Boom is the Dutch national road and time trial champion, as well as the 2008 world cyclocross champion. He took the black leader’s jersey from Slovenian rider Borut Bozic, who couldn’t keep pace with the leading pack over the race’s many picturesque peaks in south-east Belgium.

“It was the most beautiful stage of the tour,” said De Waele. “The hilly course suited me well. I went over the course beforehand, I didn’t steal this victory.”

The race’s fifth and final stage on Sunday is a 17km individual time trial, with Belgium’s Nicolas Cornu (Quick Step), currently fourth in the general classification, likely to provide Boom with his most serious challenge for overall victory. Boom and Cornu are each former U23 world time trial champions, Cornu in 2006 and Boom in 2007.

Besides Boom, cyclocross fans will notice several familiar names in the results, including two other former cyclocross world champions. Niels Albert (the reigning ‘cross world champion) is in 17th and Sven Nys (the 2005 world champ) is 30th.

Brent Bookwalter (BMC) remains the top American in the race, in 20th. Teammate Jeff Louder is in 73rd and Ian McKissick is 86th.
