Greipel takes another; Valverde keeps lead

Everyone knew Tuesday’s long, tedious 16th stage at the Vuelta a España was going to end up in a bunch sprint.
Despite some of the top sprinters leaving the race early, including Tyler Farrar and Tom Boonen, there was still enough fight left in the bunch to make it interesting in the closing kilometers.
Despite efforts by Milram and Liquigas, the result was much of the same, with André Greipel easily winning his third stage victory of the Vuelta and Columbia-HTC’s fourth.
“It’s a very important win for me, I very much wanted to get the victory today for a lot of reasons,” Greipel said afterwards. “It was a tricky finish with a lot of corners, but my team-mates kept me in front and I managed to stay out of trouble. We were lucky that only one rider was in the break and that made it a lot easier for us to control the race during the stage.”
Greipel was set up perfectly by teammate Greg Henderson, who raised his arms in triumph as he watched the big German finish off the work.
Greipel made easy work of the pack, finishing ahead of William Bonnet (Bouygues Telecom), with Daniele Bennati (Liquigas) trailing across third.
Greipel takes over the green points jersey with the victory. He was racing with the jersey Tuesday, only because race leader Alejandro Valverde was also leading in the points race as well. The battle for green should go down to the wire.
“There are two stages that should finish in a bunch sprint and two that are going that are very mountainous, so it’s going to be difficult. We’ll see in Madrid,” he’ll see in Madrid.
The German’s 18th victory of the season is also the 80th of the season for Columbia-HTC men’s team, who also won a stage on Tuesday in the Tour of Britain.
A winner at Puertollano before, Bennati signaled his frustration after coasting across the line third without being able to seriously challenge Greipel for the win.
“I feel very bitter about being placed but not winning yet again in this Vuelta. I’m not lacking in form but unfortunately, because of various different things that happen in the stage finales, I can’t take advantage of that form. Today, thanks to the team’s support, I thought it could be time to finally break the spell,” Bennati said. “Then, in the final few hundred meters, the Columbia team’s work forced me onto Henderson’s wheel with Greipel behind me. When I then launched my sprint, I went straight into a headwind and, thanks to his better position, Greipel could easily overtake me.”
Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d’Epargne) avoided troubles and easily retained the race leader’s jersey.
“The stage looked flat on paper, but we climbed more than 2,500 meters during the day,” he said. “It was fairly calm out there, but it could have been worse. Plus, everyone was getting tired, especially after nearly five hours on the bike. That crash happened almost in the same spot as last year, but I got through. You have to pay attention, you cannot let your guard down, even for a moment.”
Long break to nowhere
After a long respite without sprint finishes, the fast-twitch gang were keen to get a shot at victory.
Columbia-HTC and Milram were active in the early going of the stage to reel in dangerous-looking breakaways. Once the other teams saw that Columbia was intent on controlling the race, wasting energy in a breakaway made little sense against the inevitability of the Columbia train.
Finally, Spanish rider Jesus Rosendo Prado (Andalucia-Cajasur) attacked alone and built a lead of more than 12 minutes before the peloton finally neutralized him with under 20km to go.
His lone adventure was the first solo breakaway in this year’s Vuelta and it revealed that riders are getting tired and perhaps hesitant to try to work a breakaway when everyone knew it would likely come down to a bunch sprint.
Sprints into the Puertollano are the tradition for this part of Spain, with such riders as Alessandro Petacchi and Daniele Bennati claiming victories.
Columbia-HTC took control of the final run into Puertollano. A technical finale, with four challenging curves in the final 3km made for a high-risk sprint.
Julian Dean (Garmin-Slipstream) locked his handlebars against the barriers and brought down Roger Hammond (Cervélo TestTeam) and Wouter Weylandts (Quick Step), among a few others, as they were fighting for position to try to grab Greipel’s wheel.
