Vuelta a España points competition winner André Greipel added another win to an impressive 2009 record as he outsprinted the field at Paris-Bourges on Thursday.

Greipel, powered ahead of a 91-rider field, beating JJ Haedo (Saxo Bank) and Cofidis’ Alexandre Usov to the line. The win is Greipel’s 20th of the season.

Greipel was quick to credit his team for countering late attacks as other teams attempted to deny the German a shot at a field sprint.

“We worked hard to ensure that this one ended in a sprint,” said Griepel. “I am fortunate to be able to rely on a strong team.”

Française des Jeux director Franck Pineau said that his team’s best hope was to launch late attacks in an effort to gap Greipel in the rush to the finish. The team nearly succeeded when it managed to place Sebastian Chavanel into a late break, but the Columbia squad reeled the group in before the finish.

“It’s always disappointing to leave without a win,” Pineau said. “Our strategy was simple and so was Columbia’s. They wanted to see a field sprint. We knew if it came down to that, it was a perfect situation for Greipel.”

Greipel said the result bodes well for Sunday’s Paris-Tours, one of the last one-day classics of the season.

“There was a significant break and I found myself gapped at one point,” Greipel said. “It was my team that pulled this off. In a classic of this magnitude, only the strongest sprinters manage to be in a position to contest the finish. It’s a reminder that if I find myself in the same positionon Sunday, I have a good chance.”
