As if Friday’s challenging stage 3 wasn’t enough for those taking on La Ruta de los Conquistadores, the weather conspired with the distance and topography on Saturday’s final stage.
Caribbean rain fell all of Friday night and throughout Saturday making for a wet and muddy ride to the end. And while Manuel Prado won the 398km La Ruta overall, all 219 riders had to deal with crossing Costa Rican rivers on railroad bridge tracks for over 50 kilometers, according to race officials. Special carts were created to transport some of the racers across a few bridges, mainly those riders affected by vertigo.
The level of the rain-swollen rivers forced race organizers to detour to a new course, which led racers nearly 20 kilometers on a parallel highway. Cars, buses and trucks were then involved in the race, beeping and taking photos as racers passed.
