Prado Leads La Ruta After Stage 1

Team Sho-Air’s Manuel Prado won the first stage of the La Ruta de los Conquistadores on Wednesday.

Prado, a California-based Costa Rican, finished one second ahead of Heinz Zoerweg of Austria on the 108-km stage, which topped out at 1,170 meters. Spanish rider Marc Thayter took third while four-time Vuelta a España winner Roberto Heras filled the fourth spot approximately 10 minutes back.

Americans Jeremiah Bishop and Alex Grant finished sixth and seventh respectively.

The 17th installment of La Ruta saw 225 racers from various countries start the 389-km race on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. The race will finish on the country’s Caribbean shore on Nov. 14.
