Bettini accused of tax evasion

Former Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion Paolo Bettini has been accused of tax evasion, allegedly avoiding 11 million Euros in Italian tax payments, the news agency Ansa reported on Friday.

Italy’s tax agency alleges that the 35-year-old Bettini had tried to avoid paying taxes by falsely claiming to have relocated to the tax haven of Monaco.

Bettini was twice crowned world champion in 2006 and 2007 and also picked up the Olympic gold medal in Athens in 2004.
