While winter weather blasted much of Europe, Team Milram was enjoying a weeklong training camp on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
“We called together our complete new squad to prepare ourselves together for the important work in the coming season,” said team manager Gerry van Gerwen.
The 24-man squad includes 16 Germans, among them veterans like Christian Knees and Fabian Wegmann riding alongside youngsters like Dominik Nerz and the two co-captains, Linus Gerdemann and Gerald Ciolek.
The days kicked off with half-hour walks on the beach followed by stabilization training under the direction of the team’s physiotherapists. After breakfast, the 24-man squad would ride for up to six hours under the Mallorcan sun, splitting into groups targeting specific events, such as the Tour Down Under or the spring classics. Bikes were dialed in. And there were the usual team meetings and discussions to keep everyone on the same page.
“We can look with confidence to the new year,” van Gerwen said. “The signs are there, starting with the meetings to the technical settings on the bikes up to the daily training – everything has gone perfectly. The guys together with our sporting staff and the physiotherapists and mechanics have completed a tough program.”
On Tuesday the team travels home for the holidays.WE
