Spaniard Carlos Sastre, winner of the 2008 Tour de France, confirmed Saturday that he will compete in next year’s Giro d’Italia.

The 2010 edition of the Italian national tour gets under way on May 8 in Amsterdam.

“After analyzing the routes of the three big tours — Italy, France and Spain — and discussing things with the team sporting director I’ve decided to take part in the Giro,” said the Cervélo TestTeam rider. “It’s a real opportunity,” he added, noting that the 2010 route was “very attractive” for a rider like him.

The Spanish climber won two prestigious stages of last year’s Giro — Monte Petrano and Vesuvio — and finished fourth overall.

Sastre is also hoping to compete in the Tour of Catalunya March 22-28 and the classics Amstel Gold Race and Liège-Bastogne-Liège in April but has not yet decided on his calendar after the Giro.
