While most pro teams search out mid-winter training roads in Spain, Milram has headed to greener pastures for a pre-season camp in Cyprus.
Several of the German-backed team are enjoying good weather and varied roads in the Mediterranean island through January 20.
“Training on Cyprus is a nice change from our usual places,” Milram’s Fabian Wegmann said. “Everything is good here, especially the weather. It’s about 10 degrees (Celsius – or 50 degrees Fahrenheit) here than it is on Mallorca right now. The training conditions are perfect. Some of the roads are brand-new and you can for hours and barely see a car.”
Mallorca, Spain’s Canary islands and the sunny Mediterranean coast have long been favorite haunts for pro teams searching out milder, mid-winter conditions for pre-season training camps.
One of Milram’s co-sponsors, a travel agency, connected with the Cyprus tourism agency to bring the German squad to the island.
Joining Wegmann on the Med’s third-largest island are Johannes Frohlinger, Matthias Russ, Christian Knees and Paul Voss.
The team will be making its season debut later this month at the Tour of Qatar.
With Milram likely ending its sponsorship at the end of the year, strong results will be paramount to securing a new deal to continue the team.
