SRAM has announced plans to release a new entry level road group, intended to compete against Shimano’s 105 group, in the spring of 2010.
SRAM’s new Apex group sports many of the same features that appear in the company’s other offerings, including its DoubleTap brake and shift levers, Zero-Loss shifting and Exact Actuation.
SRAM has labeled the group’s features under the banner of WiFLi – Wider, Faster and Lighter: Wider in that the crankset and cogs offer a wider range of gears (with inside chainrings down to 34 teeth and cassettes with as many as 32); Faster, because the system is still based on a double, rather than a triple, crankset and Lighter, because the company lists its group weight at 2435 grams, about 150 grams lighter than 105.
The company is expected to ship its first Apex groups to manufacturers in April and bike shops should see the first shipments around June. SRAM has not released suggested retail pricing.
