Competitor Group, Inc., headquartered in San Diego, CA, is the leading media and event entertainment company dedicated to the endurance sports industry of running, cycling and triathlons. CGI is comprised of the following brands: Competitor Magazine, Triathlete Magazine, Inside Triathlon, VeloNews, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, Muddy Buddy and VeloPress. CGI owns and operates 26 national events delivering more than 250,000 professional and amateur participants in 2009. CGI publishes four magazine titles with a combined monthly circulation of approximately 2 million and also produces the leading web portal for endurance sports.
The editor is responsible for the editorial vision and plan of the magazine and helps develop and manage budgets, participates in strategic planning and formulating new ideas for current and future media products, top editorial content, and represents the Competitor Group brand at many different venues. The editor also regularly interacts with the business staff on the magazine and plays an integral part in the growth process of Competitor Group products.
Essential functions and performance standards:

Directs content and design strategies of the magazine

Leads the team’s development of cover concepts and executing cover shoots

Works closely with the art director on conceptualizing the overall design of the magazine

Develops and manages departmental budgets

Leads a full-time staff and a team of freelance writers

Plans editorial calendars

Edits all content

Develops relationships with freelance writers, photographers and industry experts

Writes on a monthly basis

Helps develops the magazine’s online presence, including extended content

Collaborates with the publishers on special projects

Travels to events, races and industry trade shows regularly as a journalist and as a representative of the magazine

Continually self-educates on the latest in endurance sports industry news as well as in the journalism, website and magazine fields.
Ancillary functions:
-
Consults on story topics and editorial planning for Inside Triathlon as necessary

Contributes articles to Inside Triathlon occasionally

Contributes to the website
Communicates regularly with: Publisher, editorial director, managing editor, designer, the photo editor, production coordinator and industry sources.
Terms of Employment: full-time, exempt
Skills/experience required:
Seven to 10+ years in an editorial capacity, preferably in a sport-related field. Knowledge of triathlon and/or endurance sports. Bachelors or advanced degree in journalism or related field or equivalent work experience. Skills: Working knowledge of grammar, punctuation, AP style and spelling. Computer skills for editing and writing; knowledge of computer software programs, such as Microsoft Word.
Working conditions: There are periods of strict deadlines and high pressure. Also, the ability to effectively communicate with outside sources (writers, photographers, article sources) is essential; as is serving as an exemplary representative of the magazine in all venues, including during interviews for articles.
The office culture includes casual dress but may require business attire for certain functions including meetings, trade shows, etc.
General office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Flexible work hours are available and must be approved by the managing editor and/or editor.
