Fly V Australia scored a second stage win at the Tour of Murrieta Sunday as Alessandro Bazzana took the victory in the 60-mile Rabobank Circuit Race ahead of teammate Jonathan Cantwell. Karl Menzies (UnitedHealthcare p/b Maxxis) finished third on the day to secure the overall win in the three-day omnium. In the women’s race Kathryn Donovan of host club INCYCLE/SC Velo won the stage while Lauren Tamayo and Shelley Evans finished with the same number of omnium points.
An aggressive day unfolded over 17 laps in the men’s race, with a slew of unsuccessful attacks drawing splits of up to 20 seconds. In the end, though, it was the UHC train lining up again Sunday for Menzies with Bazzana and Cantwell sitting in. The Fly V Australia duo came around Menzies and company and when Cantwell was hung up in a surging peloton, Bazzana turned his leadout into a sprint to take the win.
“We raced very aggressively today (Sunday). There were a lot of breakaways, but nothing got more than 20 seconds,” said Bazzana. “”We are really happy with the way things turned out. We didn’t get to do the time trial (Friday’s stage 1 ITT was limited to 50 entrants), so that took us a bit out of the GC. So most important for us was to win stages and Fly V Australia won both that we entered.”
Donovan on the day; Evans, Tamayo two-for-one
Kathryn Donovan of host club INCYCLE/SC Velo took the win in the women’s 46-mile race. Coryn Rivera, Shelley Evans and Lauren Tamayo (Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12) finished second, third and fourth. Evans and Tamayo finished locked atop the omnium standings with 76 points each. The omnium win goes to Tamayo based on her stage 2 win, which is the first tiebreaker for an individual omnium tie.
