Botero, Calle earn gold at South American Games

Former world time trial champion and Tour de France stage winner Santiago Botero of Colombia won a gold medal in the individual time trial at the South American Games in Medellin, Colombia, Wednesday. Botero, racing for the Colombian national team, rode the 40km course in 49:04.055, beating second-placed Matias Medici of Argentina by 21 seconds.

Jorge Contreras of Chile finished tenth.

Fellow Colombian María Luisa Calle Williams won the 20km women’s race in 27:44, beating her teammate Ana Paola Villegas by 1:20. Calle, a 41-year-old Medellin native, won a bronze medal in the 2004 Olympic points race in Athens.

The South American Games continue until March 23 and include road, track, BMX and mountain bike events.
