Colombia swept the 2010 South American Games road cycling events this week, as former ProTour rider Santiago Botero won the games’ time trial and road race and Colombians Maria Luisa Calle and Ana Paola Villegas won the women’s time trial and road race, respectively.
The games, held in Medellin, Colombia, wrap up Tuesday.
Colombia took the first three spots in Monday’s 73 kilometer men’s road race, with Botero winning out of an all-Colombian three-man breakaway with Luis Felipe Jimenez and Sergio Luis Montoya finishing at the same time. Colombia’s Fabio Andres Arevalo finished just under four minutes behind the trio.
In the women’s race, Villegas won in a solo break, ahead of Brazil’s Rosane Kirch and Calle, who came in alone three and four minutes back, respectively.
Colombia is dominating the track and BMX events at the games, as well, winning all the disciplines except for the men’s points race, which was won by Chile’s Marco Quinchel. The mountain bike cross-country races will be held Tuesday.
