Cofidis’ Samuel Dumoulin won the sixth stage of the Tour of Catalonia, a 161.9km run between el Vendrell and Barcelona in north-eastern Spain on Saturday, in a bunch sprint.
Katusha’s Joaquim Rodriguez remains the overall leader, followed by fellow Spaniard Xavier Tondo of Cervélo who is 10 seconds behind in the overall standings.
“Everything went faster than expected and the team had to work harder than we imagined,” said Rodriguez.
Britain’s Mark Cavendish of HTC-Columbia, who dropped out of Friday’s fifth stage won by Italy’s Davide Malacarne, pulled out of the race because he is struggling with flu.
The 24-year-old won the second stage ─ a 182.6km run between Salt and Banyoles ─ on Tuesday, his first victory in six months.
The 90th edition of the Tour of Catalonia ends on Sunday with a 117.8km
course at Barcelona’s Montmelo circuit.
