RadioShack’s Lance Armstrong, Levi Leipheimer and Jason McCartney will race as Team Mellow Johnny’s at the SRAM Tour of the Gila in New Mexico.
The race starts next Wednesday, and as a national level event UCI teams like RadioShack are not allowed to compete. But under a compromise reached last year — when Armstrong, Leipheimer and Chris Horner (then all on Astana) raced — as many as three team members are allowed to race but are not allowed to wear their ProTour team kit.
Besides the RadioShack three, three members of the Garmin-Transitions team will race the Gila this year, in DZ Nuts kit.
Leipheimer won the Gila last year, after winning the opening Mogollon mountain-top finish stage and the stage 3 time trial.
“Not only do the state and the local fans embrace this race, but the terrain, competition, and timing is perfect. We are looking forward to taking the start in Silver City, it’s a great event,” said Armstrong. “It is also a great opportunity to ride with our U23 squad and check in on their development,” added Armstrong, referring to the Trek-Livestrong team that will compete with a full squad, including world pursuit champion Taylor Phinney.
SRAM announced the Mellow Johnny’s roster in a statement Tuesday evening. The component company supplies the RadioShack team, Trek-Livestrong and several other men’s and women’s teams that will race at the Gila.
