On a day marked by high winds, Jamis-Sutter Home rider Luis Amaran won stage 2 of the SRAM Tour of the Gila, an 80-mile loop starting and finishing in Fort Bayard, about 10 miles from the race’s epicenter in Silver City.
Amaran won a bunch sprint of about 40 riders that managed to stay together as winds gusting over 55 mph blew the peloton into pieces throughout the day.
Race leader Levi Leipheimer (Mellow Johnny’s) finished second to preserve his overall lead; Bissell’s Kyle Wamsley finished third on the stage.
Leipheimer’s Mellow Johnny’s teammates Lance Armstrong and Jason McCartney finished safely in the bunch, as did DZs Nuts riders Dave Zabriskie, Tom Peterson and Tom Danielson, who preserved his second-place position on GC.
