The Joe Martin Stage Race kicked off near Fayettsville, Arkansas, Thursday with the opening Devil’s Den Hill Climb Time Trial, a 2.5-mile test.

Andrew Talansky (California Giant-Specialized), the best young rider at last week’s SRAM Tour of the Gila, is continuing to turn heads, this time by winning the men’s race in 7.54, about 8 seconds ahead of Ben Day (Fly V Australia). Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell) was third, just a quarter of a second behind Day.

Webcor’s Kathryn Curi Mattis won the women’s race in 9:38, less than a second ahead of Joe Martin’s defending women’s overall champ, Alison Powers of Vera Bradly Foundation. Alison Starnes (Tibco-To the Top) was third. Last year Powers won the TT and Curi Mattis was second.

The race continues with road races Friday and Saturday and a criterium Sunday.
