Fabian Wegmann sprinted to victory in the Rund um den Finanzplatz Eschborn-Frankfurt on Saturday.

The 29-year-old Milram rider took his first victory of 2010 after 201.7 km of racing ahead of Landbouwkrediet teammates Geert Verheyen and Bert Scheirlinckx. It was Wegmann’s second consecutive win here, and came in the wake of a five-week layoff due to a fractured collarbone.

“I am overjoyed today. Winning here last year was a dream, repeating my success is simply unbelievable,” said Wegmann, who praised teammates Niki Terpstra and Christian Knees for their assistance.

“It was a fantastic performance by our whole team. Our tactics worked out perfectly. I was just able to get into the decisive group. The finale was incredibly hard. Niki Terpstra and Christian Knees totally sacrificed themselves for our success and brought me into perfect position just before the little chicane about 300 meters before the finish line. I knew that I would have to be in the front from there on, since only one rider can ride the optimal line.”

His boss, team manager Gerry van Gerwen, was equally pleased. Milram is Germany’s sole ProTour squad, and its title sponsor’s contract is up at the end of this season.

“This repeat win in Frankfurt is unbelievably important for our team,” he said, “especially as it looked at one point as if we could not possibly win.”
