U23 crit’ champ Schneider misses podium for hospital

Freshly crowned U.S. Women’s U23 criterium champion Samantha Schneider (Tibco-To The Top) was taken to a Bend, Oregon hospital Friday evening. Schneider, who an hour earlier had secured the U23 title with a sixth-place finish in the Elite Women’s race, was taken to an area hospital when she complained of vision problems and head pain.

Team manager Linda Jackson told VeloNews Saturday morning that Schneider spent several hours at the hospital Friday night after complaining of, “blurry vision, nausea, shaking and severe pain in the back of her head.”

“The last diagnosis I heard (late) was severe migraine,” said Jackson. “She was on IV and pain med’s when I went to bed.”

Schneider, a former national junior cyclocross champion, is the final leadout for team leader Brooke Miller and survived the crash on the penultimate lap Friday that took down favorites Miller and Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Colavita-Baci).

Women’s racing resumes Sunday morning with the 113km road race. Schneider’s availability for the road race is not known at this time. With nine riders, Tibco, the lone U.S.-based, UCI-registered women’s team, is a favorite to repeat Meredith Miller’s national title from 2009.
