Evelyn Stevens scores solo win at Giro Donne

Giro Donne stage 7: Como to Albese Con Cassano (110.8km)

U.S. national TT champion Evelyn Stevens (HTC-Columbia) won today’s mountainous stage 7 of the Giro Donne, attacking with 50 kilometers remaining and holding off a chasing group by 42 seconds. The effort moves Stevens into fourth overall, 1:14 back.

Overnight leader Marianne Vos (Netherlands) crossed the line in second, maintaining the 27-second gap between herself and second place on the general classification, Judith Arndt (HTC-Columbia). Arndt finished third on the day.

“It was a really classy win. She took off a long way from the finish with one very hard climb to go, and she managed to stay away,” said HTC team manager Ronny Lauke. “It was touch and go at some points. The last climb was about eight kilometers long and had sections of 12 to 14 percent, and at the summit she only had about 20 seconds on the chasers. She did a good descent, though, and even increased her time in the last part of the course. That was impressive.”

Mara Abbott and Amber Neben (both U.S. National Team) made the select chase group, moving themselves into sixth and seventh on GC.
