U.S. Scene This Week: The American herd heads to Elk Grove

The rolleurs and sprinters ride into the second half of the U.S. season this weekend as the Tour of Elk Grove takes place Friday through Sunday northwest of Chicago.
The three-stage National Racing Calendar event includes an individual time trial, circuit race and criterium and favors the fast finishers in the race. The 4.5-mile MTI Construction Time Trial opens the race Friday night. With the GC sorted for the first time, the 96.3-mile AXA Equitable circuit race and Gullo International 71.5-mile criterium will provide the final arenas for the battle for more than $150,000 in prize money.
Fly V Australia, Jamis-Sutter Home and UnitedHealthcare-Maxxis will arrive in Elk Grove with full guns. Luis Amaran (Jamis) and Rory Sutherland (UnitedHealthcare) and their teams are locked in a battle for the NRC overall titles with just five events remaining.
Alejandro and Anibal Borrajo will join Amaran in Illinois, while previous winners Karl Menzies and Hilton Clarke will be there for UHC.
Fresh from a top-10 finish at the Tour de France Chris Horner (RadioShack) will also be at Elk Grove, as will returning champs David Veilleux (Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Mike Friedman (Jelly Belly).
Stage 1: Friday July 30 5:30 p.m.
MTI Construction Time Trial – 4.5 miles
Stage 2: Saturday July 31 4:00 p.m.
AXA Equitable Circuit Race – 96.3 miles
Stage 3: Sunday August 1 3:00 p.m.
Gullo International Criterium – 71.5 miles
