Multi-time national champion Coryn Rivera (Peanut Butter & Co.-Twenty12) earned her first world championship medal Sunday, taking the bronze in the road race at the UCI Junior World Championships Sunday in Italy.

Rivera’s medal was the second at these championships for the American team, following Lawson Craddock’s bronze in the men’s time trial on Friday. Craddock was the top American in the men’s road race at 14th. U.S. junior men won the overall season-long Nations’ Cup, which concluded at the world championships.

Rivera led the four-member women’s squad to a solid showing, with all four in the top 20. Kaitlin Antonneau (Team Kenda) was eighth, Kendall Ryan (VRC-NOW-MS Society) 10th and Jessica Prinner (ABD Cycle Club) was 16th.

The 17-18 year-olds did five laps of a 16-kilometer circuit outside Offida, Italy,  on Sunday. On the third lap the field split under pressure from the Russian and Italian teams. All four of the Americans made the split.

On the final lap, seven women escaped, including Rivera. Following the final big climb the lead group was down to four riders leaving it all to the last 500 meters and a virtual photo finish that saw Rivera grab the bronze, recording the same time as gold medalist Pauline Ferrand Prevot of France.

The other Americans came in with the lead chase group less than three minutes later.

“The ladies rode spectacular,” said USA Cycling Junior Programs Manager Benjamin Sharp.

“The team executed their plan to perfection. The girls did a good job of putting Coryn in the spot she needed to be and then she raced her bike well. The thing I’m most pleased with is the progression they’ve made over the last two years and that’s a product of being able to race in Europe in some of the world’s top events with our development programs and having the opportunity to work with one of the world’s best women’s coaches in Manel.”

Rivera’s medal is the first scored by an American junior woman in the world championship road race since Dede Berry in 1989.
