After about 67 miles and nearly four hours of racing, the 2010 Marathon World Championships men’s event ended with five riders finishing within 10 seconds of each other.
In a race that saw a blistering pace, Austria’s Alban Lakata nipped Mirko Celestino of Italy by five seconds to take the victory at St. Wendel, Germany on Sunday. At the 2009 marathon Worlds, Lakata finished second behind Roel Paulissen. Finishing third 5.5 seconds back on Sunday was South African and U23 cross-country world champion Burry Stander.
Esther Suss of Switzerland topped the women’s field followed by 2009 champ Sabine Spitz, who was nearly two mintues behind. Third place was Annika Langvad of Denmark at nearly three minutes behind.
The two American women riders were Krista Park (Cannondale-Incycle) and Sonya Looney (Ergon-Topeak), who finished 27th and 30th respectively. Jeremiah Bishop (Cannondale Factory Racing) didn’t make the trip to Germany due to illness.
