Interbike Tech Gallery: Stevens bikes

It’s only been a year or so since Sinclair Imports started bringing in bikes from the German brand, Stevens. The bikes are well known in Europe and gained quick fame in the USA by sponsoring Katie Compton with cyclocross frames, but the Stevens road line isn’t as recognizable.

However, a new bike like the new Ventoux could change that. Vince Caceres from Stevens Canada told us that the Ventoux was designed from the ground up with German magazine tests and reader polls in mind. Publications like Tour Magazine and others are notorious for publishing frame stiffness data from their extensive test labs. They also have extensive, active readership and their reader polls are influential in European product development.

As a result, the new Ventoux frame from Stevens blends the stiffness demanded by the bench test data with comfort prioritized by reader polls.

“It’s a stiff, long-distance comfort bike,” said Caceres. The Ventoux has a taller head tube than what is typically found on race bikes, but the 1.5-inch lower headset bearing and the internal Shimano BB86 press fit bottom bracket help maintain rigidity. Additionally, the down tube and seat tube are very wide as they meet the bottom bracket. The seat tube in particular has a wildly oversized, asymmetric shape similar to that found on the (also German) Canyon Ultimate CF. With slender seat stays, 960 gram frame weight, and a Di2 option, the Ventoux looks like a fantastic bike for its $2,500 price tag.
