GoPro now has an “entry-level” version of its hands-free HD HERO video camera —  the HD HERO 960.

At $179, the 960 incorporates the same professional-level image capturing and sound quality as the original $300 1080p HD HERO, but with resolutions on the HD HERO 960 limited to 960p (1280 x 960) and 720p (1280 x 720) at 30 frames per second, and WVGA (848 x 480) at 60 frames per second.

Also removed from the HD HERO 960 is the HERO BUS expansion port that is present on the full featured 1080p HD HERO. The HERO BUS allows for LCD, secondary battery and additional expansion BacPacs to be attached to the original 1080p HD HERO camera, but not the HD HERO 960.

A new feature on the HD HERO 960 is “One Button Mode” which locks the camera into video or photo mode and automatically starts recording once the camera is turned on.

The HD HERO 960 is available now at GoPro.com. The original HD HERO retails for about $300.
