The rain held out in Pennsylvania long enough this weekend to get in the year’s first UCI cyclocross race, Nittany Lion Cross, at the velodrome in Breingsville on Saturday.

Laura Van Gilder (C3-Athletes Serving Athletes) started the Mid-Atlantic Cyclocross calendar where she left off in 2009 when she won the overall title. Trading in her criterium machine for the mudder, Van Gilder topped Kristin Gavin (Cf-Elite) and Maureen Bruno-Roy (Mm Racing-Seven Cycles) on the fast, rolling grass adjacent to the track.

In the men’s elite race, multiple-time junior national champ Luke Keough (Champion System) edged out veteran Adam Myerson (Cycle-Smart) and defending series champ Valentin Scherz (Cyfac-Champion System) for the opening-day win.

Van Gilder and Keough lead the MAC — and the world UCI standings — after the first of 11 events on tap this fall for the East Coast series. The next stop for the MAC is set for the Charm City UCI-2 weekend , September 18-19 in Baltimore, Maryland.
