Abbott is Italy bound.

Reigning U.S. national champion and 2010 Giro Donne winner Mara Abbott has signed a deal to ride for Italy’s Safi-Pasta Zara-Manhattan team.

Abbott, currently a member of the U.S.-based Peanut Butter & CO Twenty12 team, recently inked a deal with Safi-Pasta manager Maurizio Fabretto.

“Mara has exploded this year at the Tour of Italy, dominating in the mountain stages, and we’ve been watching her develop for some time,” said Fabretto.

“She’s just 24 and already one of the best athletes in the world and she still has significant potential for improvement.”

According to a team release, Abbott’s top priority for the 2011 season is to defend her Giro Donne title. She will also continue to race in top U.S. events throughout the season.
