Omega Pharma’s Philippe Gilbert earned a repeat victory the Giro del Piemonte on Thursday, after mounting a strong attack in the final kilometer of the 194-kilometer Italian semi-classic.
The race, held in Italy’s the Apennine Mountains, is widely regarded as a key warm-up race for Saturday’s Giro di Lombardia, which Gilbert also won last year as he enjoyed a solid run through the season-ending road classics.
In 2009, Gilbert had a week-long run of victories, starting with Paris-Tours, then Piemonte and finally Lombardia. While unable to repeat his win at Paris-Tours, Gilbert said Thursday’s win puts him in solid position for a shot at a repeat this coming Saturday.
Newly crowned world champion Thor Hushovd finished with the peloton, taking 14th on the day.
