Team RadioShack tested the wheels at the 2010 Tour of California

With HED and Zipp leading the aerodynamic trend in wider carbon rims, Bontrager appears to be the next big wheel manufacturer to enter the segment.

The new Leopard-Trek team wheels

At the 2010 Amgen Tour of California, RadioShack riders were seen using prototypes that were part of the development process. These wheels weren’t seen in use at all later in the year. They used Bontrager’s XXX Lite carbon-shelled, straight pull spoke climbing hub and a wide carbon rim with a shallower depth than the current Aeolus 5.0. The rim appeared to be a HED Stinger 40 but that is not confirmed.

Chris Clinton, Bontrager’s Brand Manager, confirmed that new wheels are in the works. The new wheels are significantly different from the wheels ridden by Lance and co. in California. Clinton said that both RadioShack and Leopard Trek are currently on the wheels. Look for more from Leopard-Trek’s first training camp in Mallorca, next week.
