South African Daryl Impey, who rode for RadioShack last year and had planned to join the troubled Pegasus team for 2011, has signed with a team based in his home country, Team MTN Qhubeka.
“It has been a long hard road since the news of Pegasus but I’m looking forward to having an opportunity to ride for the best South African team and hopefully we can build this team into a Tour de France team in the years to come,” Impey said in a statement on his web site.
The 2010 Tour of Turkey overall winner said he is looking forward to riding the first ever Tour of South Africa and hopes to win his first national pro championship next week.
“I have never managed to win the (national champion’s) jersey before but have come pretty close, so I would be lying if I said I am not going for the win this year,” he said.
Qhubeka is an African charitable organization. Among its programs is one that awards bikes to children who plant trees.
“I look forward to being an ambassador of Qhubeka and winning as many races as I can so that more kids get the opportunities I have had through cycling,” Impey said
