Matthew Goss beat back a strong field of compatriots to win the opening leg of the Jayco Bay Cycling Series in Australia on Sunday.

Goss, the HTC-Highroad rider raced with a E3/Pure Tasmania jersey, came out of the final corner with enough legs to kick to victory in the first race of the 2011 racing season in Geelong. The series of criteriums is preparation for the Australian national championships and the Tour Down Under.

Goss out-kicked Chris Sutton (Sky) to claim the flowers, with Allan Davis (Bikebug.com) crossing the line third.

In the women’s race, Commonwealth Games champion Rochelle Gilmore (Honda) bested Belinda Goss (Vetta Pasta) to claim the top spot on the podium.
