Alberto Contador said Friday that he was satisfied with his third place finish in the day’s Volta ao Algarve stage.

Contador finished behind American Tejay Van Garderen (HTC-HighRoad) and Stephen Cummings (Team Sky). Contador is now second overall behind Cummings.

“The balance of the day is very good,” said Contador. “I’m very happy with the result because I could get the lead and although I was third, I have been fighting for the win until the end.”

“It was a short climb and everything that has happened before. So I am happy with the result.”

He said an overall victory against many riders who have already been racing this season would be difficult.

“It will be difficult to achieve the final victory, because they are very strong.”

He picked Tony Martin, Cummings and Van Garderen as his main rivals in Sunday’s concluding time trial. “We’re all in just 10 seconds. I will do like today,” he concluded, “do my best and we’ll see what’s the result”.
