Stéphane Poulhies sprinted to victory in stage 4 of l’Etoile de Bessèges on Saturday.

Poulhies outsprinted Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil) and Justin Jules (VC La Pomme) to win the 152.4km stage around Ales.

The stage was marked by numerous attacks, the first of which came at 8km from Bram Schmitz (Veranda’s Willem), joined by three other riders, Bert De Backer (Skil-Shimano), Laszlo Bodrogi (Team Type 1) and Thomas Voeckler (Europcar).

They were retrieved after the first challenge of the day, the Col de la Baraque, at km 56.

Twenty kilometers from the finish, Russian Yurily Trofimov (Katusha) tried an escape, taking 30 seconds over the pack only to be pulled back in the final 2km.

Anthony Ravard (Ag2r-La Mondiale) reclaimed the overall lead with one stage remaining, Sunday’s 145km leg between Gagniere and Bessèges.
