VeloNews 2010 Domestic Rider of the Year Ben Day has landed an 11th hour contract with Kenda-Geargrinder. The Aussie GC rider, winner of the Redlands Classic and Tour de Beauce a year ago, will lead the U.S. Continental squad in its American campaign.
Day was the cornerstone of the Fly V Australia squad for the last two seasons, but was left without a job when the Pegasus Racing project came apart in December.
“The amazing succession of events resulting in the demise of our dreams with Pegasus to have an Australian ProTeam left me absolutely devastated and questioning the sport,” said Day. “The silver lining came in the form of Chad Thompson at Kenda-Geargrinder.”
Day will captain the squad, which boasts an upgraded roster for 2011. Other new additions include Roman Kilun from UnitedHealthcare and Shawn Milne from Team Type 1. Kenda is set for the team’s first start at the Amgen Tour of California in May, a race in which Day nearly won a stage in 2010 before bowing out with a head injury.
General manager Chad Thompson called Day the final piece of his team’s puzzle. “We have spent seven years nurturing this program, and Day is the key to helping us move forward to the next level,” he said.
