South African Darren Lill was third in the fourth stage of his country’s home tour on Wednesday.

Lill, the 2011 South African road champion, was second in the Tour of South Africa field sprint behind solo breakaway winner Davide Torosantucci (D’angelo & Antenucci-Nippo). Kevin Reza (Europcar) won the sprint for second on the hilly 153km stage.

Lill, racing for DCM Chrome, is well known to U.S. fans for his time on BMC, Team Type 1 and Fly V Australia. He had been signed to race for the defunct Pegasus Sports team for this year.

Will Dugan (Team Type 1) was the top American on the stage, in tenth, just behind former RadioShack rider Daryl Impey (MTN Cycling). Overall leader Kristian House (Rapha Condor Sharp) finished in the same time as the top riders to carry a 2:22-lead into the fifth stage.

The race blew apart on the final climb. House attacked a select group with about 7km to go, but was soon caught. Torosantucci then counter attacked with 5km to go and held on to win by 18 seconds ahead of Reza and Lill. Dugan is not 11th on GC, the top-placed TT1 rider.

Thursday’s stage is 175km from Oudtshoorn to Barrydale
