Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis) sprinted to victory in Friday’s third stage at the Étoile de Bessèges in southern France.

Dumoulin, last year’s winner, outkicked the Vacansoleil duo of Johnny Hoogerland and Marco Marcato, who crossed the line second and third, in the 148.5km run from Saint-Victor-La-Coste to Laudun.

Overnight leader Anthony Ravard (Ag2r) lost his race leader’s jersey to Hoogerland.

A big group of about 15 riders peeled away early, but that was brought back with about 65km to go. There was another flurry of attacks before another group pulled clear in the closing kilometers, finishing a handful of seconds ahead of the chasing pack.
