Big names come out for Redlands prologue

The 27th Redlands Bicycle Classic opens Thursday in Southern California with a 3.1-mile uphill prologue. Redlands pulls back the curtain on the 2011 National Racing Calendar and runs through Sunday’s stage 3 Sunset Road Race.

Riders highlighting the startlist include:

• 2010 VeloNews riders of the year Ben Day (Kenda-5-hour Energy), Jonathan Cantwell (V Australia), Mara Abbott (SC Velo – Empower Coaching), Cath Cheatley (Colavita-Forno D’Asolo) and Coryn Rivera (Peanut Butter & Co.-Twenty12)
• Former world and Olympic champion Kristin Armstrong (Peanut Butter & Co.-Twenty12)
• 2006 and 2007 winner Amber Neben (HTC-Highroad)
• 2010 NRC overall champion Luis Amaran (Jamis-Sutter Home)
• 1984 Olympic gold medalist and 1988 Redlands winner Alexi Grewal (Swami’s Development)
• Tour de France stage winner Raúl Alcalá (Herbalife LaGrange)
