Cadel Evans and George Hincapie get their seasons started this week in Italy. The BMC Racing veterans each delayed the starts to their 2011 campaigns to take advantage of warm weather training and remain fresh for midseason objectives. Evans will toe the line at Thursday’s Giro del Friuli one-day race.

“There are a lot of riders who are far ahead of me in terms of physical condition,” he said. “This is the latest start to a season I have had since 2004. It will be an adjustment for me, as well as those who are used to seeing me in front early in the season. People seem to forget how long and hard the cycling season is.”

Hincapie will join Evans on the rolling dirt roads of Tuscany Saturday for the Montepaschi Strade Bianche. The pair plans to work for the team, with former world champion Alessandro Ballan on good form, three years removed from his second-place finish on the white roads.

Evans last saw the Tuscan dirt in competition in stage 7 of last year’s Giro d’Italia, where he beat Damiano Cunego and Alexandre Vinokourov on an epic, 220km day.
